My 2¢ about this movie and DVD

James Cameron's rendition of Titanic follows a fictional story intertwined with an accurate account of the fate of the ship. So even though you know what will happen, you are still drawn in to the personal story of Jack and Rose as they battle the obstacles society places between their love. The careful blend of historical accounts - both related to the demise of Titanic and early 1900's society - and the romance of Jack and Rose keeps this movie interesting. Basically, its a documentary and a drama wrapped up in one. You get a fairly realistic view of the event sprinkled with several personal stories to make you feel involved in the story. Its something that the Discovery channel is doing more and more of.

4 out of 5 Hilarious alternate ending, August 4, 2008

Really, what else needs to be said about Titanic? This edition has some great background material that you'll enjoy including an alternate ending that will have you rolling and pounding on the floor! I'm not sure who ultimately gets the the credit for the one that we all know but from this you can see that the editing room doesn't get near enough credit.
2 out of 5 Maudlin, July 22, 2008

Not everyone who leaves a negative review about this film has an anti-Cameron agenda, and not everyone who leaves a positive review is a naive 13 year-old girl. I am not a kid, but was unable to publish this review without leaving my real name and real address, so phooey to that. Onward...

There are those of us who simply didn't like the movie, who felt it was cloying and suffered from shallow, cliched characterizations. The romance was laughable, as was the obviousness of the "poor folk" vs. the "rich folk," the perfect working class hero as perfect martyr, the unsatisfied rich girl, the snobby parents, the scheming competitor, etc.. Nearly every stock character was hauled out for this movie, and given nothing fresh.

The only interesting character in the movie was the ship itself. Perhaps that's why they named the movie "Titanic."

That it appealed to a younger set is no surprise, and should not be taken as a criticism of the film. Cliche doesn't apply to kids because everything is new to them. We jaded movie buffs are a tough lot to please, and maybe we should realize that a majority of films aren't made for us. They are made for the wide-eyed young masses who haven't yet learned about archetypes. And not that archetypes are the mark of bad art--rather, they are necessary, and should be handled with better camouflage than James Cameron seemed capable of writing.

My dislike of "Titanic" has nothing to do with genre prejudice. My tastes are wide-ranging, from "Aliens" to "Trip to Bountiful" to "Murderball" to "Rushmore." I didn't like "Titanic" because I consider it a mediocre movie, unredeemed by its admittedly harrowing climax. It all starts and ends with the writing. This movie was poorly written. 'Nuff said.
5 out of 5 they just don't make movies like the old days, July 7, 2008

I'm sure we've all heard this line about the great movies of the past, "Gone With the Wind" etc, but Titanic is a lot like those classics. Adventure, romance, humor, desperate times, heroes, villans, and damsels in distress, it's got it all and it delivers.
1 out of 5 A Ponderous piece of TRASH, July 3, 2008

It's absolutely disgusting that anyone can even mention this film in the same conversation with Gone with the wind. There is no comparison. It just goes to show that people are more attracted by glitter than by gold.
I won't even go into the fact that a much more interesting picture could have been made using the bare facts of the actual Titanic story. This is an insult to the heroic people who died in the actual sinking.
James Cameron is no David O Selznick (the producer of Gone with the wind, for all you who don't know) and he sure dropped one sizzler of a turd with this abomination. The sad thing is that he cashed in on making a mockery of true historical events by putting them in the shadow of this idiotic tale.
I suppose the actors did what they could with what they had to work with ( which was'nt much ), but the leads were most definitely miscast. The best character in this stinker was the iceberg, and thank God for it!!! It had a much more certain role than any of the so-called "stars" of this dreadful spectacle, and it did its job with much more style. It was with absolute pleasure that I watched Jack sink into oblivion. That's the one part of the movie that coulda been made longer, watching that clown perish. If only it had happened 2 hours sooner, and if only he had taken Rose with him. These two people were superficial, shallow, and downright tiresome to watch.
In all, an absolutely DISGUSTING display.
